What is God's ultimate promise to His people?

Eternal Life

God’s ultimate promise to His people is eternal life (1 John 2:25). In Christ, we’re promised eternal life in the presence of God (Psalm 16:11; Revelation 21:13), which is secured by the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Eternal life begins the moment you put your faith in Jesus (John 5:24), and it’s completed in our own resurrection and the new heaven and new earth (Philippians 3:20-21; Revelation 21:1-4). God’s promise does not include any guarantee of worldly wealth, health, or comfort (John 16:33; 1 Timothy 6:5-6), but His promise does include that we will have life and have it in full (John 10:10).

A Promise From God

God’s promise of eternal life is as certain as God Himself. Eternal life is not an afterthought of the Bible, or something added later in God’s plan, God determined it before creation (1 Timothy 1:9), and He guarantees it.

…in the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.

Eternal Life is life in God’s Presence

Eternal life isn’t just about having endless time, it’s about eternal relationship with God Himself. Jesus defined eternal life clearly:

“This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ.”

From Genesis to Revelation, God repeats His promise “I will be their God, and they will be my people” (Genesis 17:7, Jeremiah 31:33, Ezekiel 37:27, Zechariah 8:8, 2 Corinthians 6:16, Hebrews 8:10, Revelation 21:3). The greatest gift God gives His people is Himself.

“You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures.”

Secured by the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus

We can’t earn eternal life. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). All of us have sinned (Romans 3:23). Eternal life comes to us as a gift, paid for by Christ.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus bore our sin on the cross (1 Peter 2:24), and His resurrection guarantees that we’ve defeated death through our faith in Him. Because He lives, we have eternal hope.

Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.

Eternal Life Begins the Moment You Believe

Eternal life doesn’t begin when we die on earth. Eternal life begins when we put our faith in Jesus. Jesus told us this, in the present tense:

“Truly I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.”

The believer has eternal life right now. We’ve been made alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:4-5), sealed by the Holy Spirit as a down payment for what is yet to come (Ephesians 1:13-14), and nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 6:5, Romans 8:38-39).

Completed in Our Resurrection and the New Heaven and New Earth

What begins with faith will be completed when Christ returns. Our bodies will be raised and made new (1 Corinthians 15:42-44), and we will live forever with God in a restored creation.

“Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body.”

“Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them… He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.”

The faithful people of God in the Old Testament lived by faith and died looking forward to this city (Hebrews 11:13-16).

No Guarantee of Wealth, Health, or Comfort

The true gospel parts ways with the prosperity gospel because the prosperity gospel trades God’s eternal promise for a temporary one. Scripture warns against this directly:

If anyone teaches false doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in disputes and arguments over words. From these come envy, quarreling, slander, evil suspicions, and constant disagreement among people whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain.

Jesus never promised an easy life. He promised the opposite:

“You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

Paul was beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, hungry, and cold (2 Corinthians 11:23-27). Timothy had frequent illnesses (1 Timothy 5:23). Trophimus was left sick in Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20). John wrote Revelation exiled on Patmos (Revelation 1:9). The faithful men and women described as heroes of the faith in Hebrews 11 “went about in sheepskins, destitute, afflicted, and mistreated” (Hebrews 11:37). If wealth and health were proof of God’s favor, the apostles and the prophets would look condemned! God does give good gifts (James 1:17), but those gifts are never the promise itself.

Life in Full

God’s promise includes life in full. Jesus said:

“A thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.”

While the prosperity gospel reads this verse as a promise for the good life now, the very next verse shows what Jesus meant:

“The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Abundant life is life with the Shepherd. It’s peace with God that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7), joy that is made complete in Christ (John 15:11), and a contentment that holds whether we have plenty or little (Philippians 4:11-13). This full life can’t be taken away by any of life’s circumstances because the source of our joy is Christ Himself (Colossians 3:3-4). Jesus told us to store up treasure in heaven, “where neither moth nor rust destroys” (Matthew 6:19-20).

In Conclusion

God’s ultimate promise is everlasting life with Him, rooted in His unchanging character, secured by the cross and the empty tomb, beginning the moment we believe, and completed in our resurrection and the new heaven and the new earth. While we’re here on this first earth, He gives us life in full, not because our circumstances are easy, but because He is with us. Our suffering on this side of eternity is temporary, but our hope is eternal.

“For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
